Many social media users around the world will be disappointed to know that Twitter has announced it will be shutting its video service Vine, in which people are able to film and share micro six-second videos.
The service launched a number of stars including Lance Stewart, a prankster from New Jersey, and Jessi Smiles, who made her name by sharing amusing videos of her and her friends.
A spokesman for Twitter had this to say about the announcement:
‘Since 2013, millions of people have turned to Vine to laugh at loops and see creativity unfold. Today, we are sharing the news that in the coming months we’ll be discontinuing the mobile app. Nothing is happening to the apps, website or your Vines today. We value you, your Vines, and are going to do this the right way. You’ll be able to access and download your Vines. We’ll be keeping the website online because we think it’s important to still be able to watch all the incredible Vines that have been made. You will be notified before we make any changes to the app or website.’
Twitter recently laid off around 350 people and the move comes as they attempt to find a more sustainable way of maintaining the company.
Sad times. As a eulogy to the popular website, let’s take a look at some of the best Vines that have been shared over the years…
Remember the terrifying duck army?
Or when Michael Gove malfunctioned?
There was that kid who was THRILLED to receive an avocado
And the boy who got knocked over by this thing, and ended up riding it like Michael Jackson in Earth song
Never forget this girl who knows how to throw some shapes
And the little girl who knows exactly what she wants
Remember the cool as heck dog with sunglasses and sneakers?
Who can ever forget the face-swap that went horrifically wrong when one person vaped?
There was the kid who really, really got into some opera singing
and the dog with some excellent rapping skills
Finally, the passionate saxophone playing seal that really brings a tear to your eye
RIP Vine, you will be missed.
