As cute as they are, hedgehogs aren’t the easiest of animals to get close to, unless you’re willing to risk being impaled by their sharp spikes. But there’s one hedgehog, known as Nelson, who doesn’t come with the usual risk involved in handling these cute critters… as he’s completely bald.
Poor little Nelson suffers from alopecia, which volunteers at the foxy Lodge Wildlife Rescue put down to stress after he experienced trauma in the wild. Just look at his painfully sweet, sad face.
For a whole year, the volunteers gave Nelson daily massages with almond oil in the hope that his spikes might eventually begin to grow back, but sadly the massages failed to work. However, as Nelson enjoyed his massages so much, the volunteers continue to provide them as a way of keeping his unprotected skin soft, and of course, just to keep him happy.
The rescue centre has seen hundreds of hedgehogs with bald patched but never anything like Nelson. Tonia Garner, a manager at Foxy Lodge commented on his rare look:
‘We’ve had a couple with bald patches. But Nelson is something else. He doesn’t have a single prickle or hair on his entire body, though he does have nails so he is a mystery. We will likely never know what caused him to lose his hair and spikes. He’s a mystery but to have survived into adulthood he must have had prickles and his health is very good other than the fact he is bald.’
He may not have the traditional hedgehog look, but who can fail to fall in love with this little guy.
